Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Image
On his break from a season and driving along the highway in Colorado, Dean Robillard passed by a walking headless beaver. A very pissed girl in a beaver mascot, that is. What starts as a hilarious interlude becomes an amusing companionship and from there, things escalate to the gypsy caravan..er, the unexpected. There are few books which had me laughing on the first paragraph and this is but a first, methinks, that got me on the first sentence. It's been a while since I last read a SEP novel and I am surprised I find it still refreshing.

Roman Holiday by Ruthie Knox (serialized)

Image
Roman Holiday 1: Chained , is the first book in a 5 part mini-series and for such a short read it delivered the first volley in what is to become another Ruthie Knox hit. Chained introduces us to our protagonists. Ashley is the chained protestor, who is still grief-stricken by her beloved grandmother's death. The subsequent selling of the Sunnyvale Vacation Rentals, the place she use to call home, to the evil land developer from Miami has made her desperate. So desperate she unthinkingly chained herself to a palm tree, with just a bikini and oversize shirt on, and with no provisions whatsoever. Enter the Latino Canadian (he just sound Canadian) land developer who is one hunk of a robot. Roman has everything under control, he'll just wait it out until Ashley has had enough and he can proceed with his plans. He didn't bargain on Ashley's tenacity, her negotiating powers and an oncoming hurricane to screw everything up. I really don't like series in prinicip...

Ill-Gotten Gains: A Nell Forrest Mystery #2 by Ilsa Evans

Image
Ill-Gotten Gains is the second book in the Nell Forrest Series. Like the first book, Nell Forrest is involved in another cozy murder mystery in the town of Majic. Entertaining and engaging, readers will find themselves amused, bemused and at the edge of ones seat trying to guess who the culprit is. Nell's character is so relatable and real that you actually will be rooting for her and trying to punch her ex in behalf of her. Other quirky characters in the book adds dimension and makes you believe this town really exists and you just want to drop by one day and have a visit. Nell Forrest is a single mother to a teenager and 4 other daughters who've moved out of the nest.  This in itself is a story on its own, but its the town of Majic that becomes the centerpoint for a murder or murders.  Well a certain police officer of the gorgeous kind thinks it could be Nell, again its another story.  The lively almost laugh out of your seat detective solving ways of Nell and he...

Just Add Spice by Carol E. Wyer

Image
Enjoyed reading Just Add Spice by Carol E. Wyer . Presented in a humor filled often matter a fact way, Dawn Ellis' life reads like any other normal middle age woman does. Feeling the empty nest syndrome with a grumpy husband who lost his job and isn't any help to be around with has made Dawn reach for something she hasn't done before. She joined a writing class. Here she starts enjoying herself and she starts making friends outside of home and motherhood. Dawn also discovers her talent for writing of which she really excels. This book has no world ending surprises but the author has written it in such a way that you go through the story without getting bored. Readers would soon catch on long before the main character does. In fact as Dawn continues telling the tale of Cinnamon Knight, the heroine of her book, its obvious to readers that this is her alter ego. At the start she loves Cinnamon, who is everything she wants to be but feels that she can't ever be....

The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus

Image
Sarcastic, witty and funny bordering on the wicked, The Nanny Diaries displays the brittle and subtle relationships between the employer, the child and the nanny with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure as well as a peek of the idiosyncrasies of the lifestyle of the rich in New York. If it weren't for the snark banters with herself and all the ironic hilarity of her demeanor, you would have ditched reading the book right then and there purely out of the ridiculousness of her mad hours working for the Park Avenue bitch, I mean, wife. Nanny's grandma comes out as the most admirable character. She's quite cool and hip. Actually Nanny's family is adorable though I can't say the same for her room mate. Styled as in a memoir, it gives us a first hand insight of her impressions and despite the lack of plot, its jaunty narratives might just be the saving grace of this book. A second book, Nanny Returns , came out in 2009 as a sequel to this best-seller. I ...

Beauty Shop for Rent:...fully equipped, inquire inside by Laura Bowers

Image
Abbey Garner is used to killing time by reading questions from the snarky tabloids in Granny Po's struggling beauty shop.  It's not like there are a lot of customers to help, anyway.  Mostly just the feisty Gray Widows, who are there to primp, polish, perm... and of course, gossip.   Abbey is there to work- to get a head start on the million dollars she intends to earn by the time she's thirty-five.  She doesn't have much time for boyfriends, parties or hanging out with friends.  But with the arrival of a trendy young woman who rents the beauty parlor and turns it into a modern-day spa, at least Abbey has a chance to make some real money.  Then all of this fades into the background when Abbey's mother, who abandoned her on Granny Po's doorstep four years ago, suddenly shows up with a wild scheme of her own.  ( Book Blurb)
