The Mother-in-Law Cure by Farha Z. Hasan

Image
A young unassuming wife lives in the shadow of her powerful mother-in-law’s household.  Rather sinister and bittersweet, The Mother in Law Cure captures the ways of a matriarch wielding authority over sons, husband and anyone who gets in the way of her wishes. It started off with Humara’s story when she was younger and beset by a hunger filled by an unexplained dark magic and with it, she was able to sway events to her ends. But somewhere along the way it becomes Miriam’s as she gradually shines from the background with her quiet ways and hidden wit. Gentle Miriam treated with indifference by her husband and mother-in-law but who may yet hold the power to rise above them all. The contrast between the two women sets the temper of the writing and becomes groundwork for half-veiled battle of wills. Humara’s presence seeps into the pages like bold strokes of ink, corrupted and unavoidable. Miriam, with her impenetrable mask, could be a bit unpredictable. She glides on un

The House on the Lagoon by Rosario Ferre

Isabel Monfort, married to Quintin Mendizabal, intended to write the story of the Mendizabals and the Monforts, to account the history behind each generation. But somewhere along the way, it turned into something else, a novel about freedom from the clutching hands of power whether it be political and familial. In this saga of a wealthy Puerto Rican family, secrets go abound with riches and status. Beginning with Buenaventura Mendizabal’s arrival to the island in the early twentieth century as a descendant of old Spanish Conquistadors, it encompassed several decades up until the mid-nineties. One day, Quintin discovers the manuscripts and was in complete disagreement with the accuracy of the facts he read, claiming it a tale of fiction bending to the writer’s whims. With each passing chapter however, Isabel’s writing becomes more poignant, displaying the innermost thoughts and desires of each character. As the drama escalates in the story, so does the conflict in the Men

Books That Cook by Jennifer Cognard-Black and Melissa A. Goldtwaite

Image
Books That Cook is served like an array of cuisine in diverse flavors for one to dig in and enjoy. It was a delight to discover it was chock full of literary works; poems, snippets of fiction, memoirs (all related to food, of course) and must-have recipes. The engaging stories, steeped with old time dish, cooking wisdom and introduction of specialties, make for a cozy reading as well as useful for everyday food preparation. It was quite a brilliant idea, I must say, since I have never read anything like it (perhaps because cookbooks are not part of my usual reading). It felt like being invited to a warm kitchen and subjected to pleasant monologues from someone’s grandmother while a pot of stew is bubbling on the stove and the smell of fragrant spices fill the air. There is a sense of intimacy in being shown to each character’s household kitchens which are naturally a haven of family history, drama and nostalgia.

Meet Me in Barcelona by Mary Carter

Image
Grace Sawyer arrives in Barcelona with her boyfriend to enjoy a few days of holiday and forget her musical career woes. But fate has other things in mind when someone from her past caught up with her in the form of her old childhood best friend and foster-sister Carrie Ann Gilbert. After the breakdown of their friendship fifteen years ago, Carrie Ann’s presence in Barcelona stirred up turbulent memories Grace had long buried. Now secrets start to unravel and relationships get tested. Was Grace finally ready to face the haunting of the past and fight the shadows of her old self? In this new suspense novel, the story start out slow and a little scenic under the heady magic of Barcelona before it simmers into a bizarre turmoil as things pick up around the middle. There was much psychological play involved as well as some orchestrated ploy to keep the thrill. The book seemed like a game within a game. Though I am not big on suspense, I enjoy a subtle mystery every now and the
