Once Upon a Rose (La Vie en Roses #1) by Laura Florand

She stole his roses.

Fleeing the spotlight, burnt out rock star Layla—“Belle”—Dubois seeks refuge in the south of France. That old, half-forgotten heritage in a valley of roses seems like a good place to soothe a wounded heart. She certainly doesn’t expect the most dangerous threat to her heart to pounce on her as soon as she sets foot on the land.

He wants them back.

Matt didn’t mean to growl at her quite that loudly. But—his roses! She can’t have his roses. Even if she does have all those curls and green eyes and, and, and…what was he growling about again?

Or maybe he just wants her.

When an enemy invades his valley and threatens his home, heart, and livelihood, Matthieu Rosier really knows only one way to defend himself.

It might involve kissing

Review: So, its very difficult to write a review for a book you've been anticipating for awhile and from a favorite author at that.  Laura Florand has already captivated my bookaholic romance riddled brain ever since I've read The Chocolate…

The Evening of the Holiday by Shirley Hazzard

There’s an understated elegance in this short novel that tells the story of a young woman spending a holiday in the Italian countryside and an end of a summer romance.  Sophie meets Tancredi, an Italian who is separated from his wife and family. Amidst the courtesies of society, celebration of the town festival and walks in the countryside under the languid heat, their passion leisurely unfolds but not without its troubles.
Sophie, being half-Italian, half-English, merely glides along the periphery of Italian society in thoughts and being. Despite a number of visits, she is aware of herself standing outside the glass looking in, seeing and living but not quite belonging. Hazzard subtle brings her foreignness to the fore by the few facts of reality and some metaphors scattered here and there.
There is Sophie in the middle of a crowd going in the other direction by herself while the rest moves in the opposite way. Her meeting with Tancredi outside the walls connoting that the consumma…

Suspended Sentences by Patrick Modiano

It is perhaps a lovelier endeavour to read this in French as it is originally written because it is somewhat inevitable that some things get lost in translation. All the same reading it in English is quite pleasurable. This is Patrick Modiano’s Paris, shadowy and romantic (akin to the atmospheric book cover on the left).
Suspended Sentences, composing of three novellas, got the feel of an array of old photographs brimming over with nostalgia of forgotten and abandoned places. His asymmetrical prose resembles shifty memories. It evoked a lingering scent of dusty air and melancholy. Such is the beauty of Modiano’s work. There may be not much solid framework to its plot or characters, but it is laden with emotion and carried afloat by its lasting impressions.

Quick Review: France, the Soul of a Journey by R.J. O'Donnell

Four Irish friends crossed the English Channel to disembark on the port of Calais. From there, they made a delightful curving line on the map visiting attractive towns of the French countryside, sometimes taking the expressway sometimes the long winding back roads. Written by one of them, France, the Soul of a Journey draws not only the impressions of new places and the foibles of travelling in groups but the in depth history and myths of each landmark and figure, giving readers the reflecting views of both the past and the present.
Often, I would read of travels to France by landing on a plane or alighting on a train but this is probably a first that I read about travelling by car and touring spots along the way. It would have been more enjoyable if I had a map of France tacked in front of me while reading for it’d be easier to follow their course.

This was a fun and insightful read, without the typical drone of endless descriptions of the scenery. Instead it was filled with banters…

Happy New Year!
