Ill-Gotten Gains: A Nell Forrest Mystery #2 by Ilsa Evans

Ill-Gotten Gains (Nell Forest Mystery #2)
Ill-Gotten Gains is the second book in the Nell Forrest Series. Like the first book, Nell Forrest is involved in another cozy murder mystery in the town of Majic. Entertaining and engaging, readers will find themselves amused, bemused and at the edge of ones seat trying to guess who the culprit is. Nell's character is so relatable and real that you actually will be rooting for her and trying to punch her ex in behalf of her. Other quirky characters in the book adds dimension and makes you believe this town really exists and you just want to drop by one day and have a visit. Nell Forrest is a single mother to a teenager and 4 other daughters who've moved out of the nest.  This in itself is a story on its own, but its the town of Majic that becomes the centerpoint for a murder or murders.  Well a certain police officer of the gorgeous kind thinks it could be Nell, again its another story.  The lively almost laugh out of your seat detective solving ways of Nell and her posse gets the job done and well she might get the guy too, if she wants him that is.  A very well written story that makes readers anticipate the next crime solving ways of our intrepid heroine. Hoping to read the next one soon.

Summary:
There are secrets in the sleepy town of Majic, where the past trips over the present ... and then looks the other way.

The country town of Majic is about to celebrate a milestone. It's been 150 years since the founding father, Petar Majic, rode into the bush after a liquid lunch, vowing to build a house at whatever spot he reached by sunset. However, what happened next isn't quite what town legend would have you believe.

A minor act of cemetery vandalism lands local columnist and amateur detective Nell Forrest right in the path of historical inevitability. An apparent murder-suicide leads to the unveiling of a century-old scandal and a trail left by a trio of long-dead women.

Nell's investigations are hampered both by the arrival of the handsome district detective and by her family – whose dramas almost eclipse that of the town itself. With directionless daughters, unplanned pregnancies, a spot or two of adultery and an ex-husband who wants her house, Nell barely has time for the case, let alone the energy to keep her wits about her at the same time.

And Nell will need her wits about her as the mystery of Majic begins casting its shadow into the present day, putting Nell and her family in grave danger. In the end, Nell must decide whether it is a tale of epic fortitude, or treachery and ill-gotten gains, before the past catches up with her.

Review Post: Fool Me Once by Catherine Bybee

Rating/Review: ☕☕☕☕ 1/2 (4.5 cups, this romantic suspense will give new meaning to The First Wives Club)
You never know what you really would be getting when reading a Catherine Bybee book.  On the outside, each book can definitely hold its own as a great contemporary romance novel.  Read a little bit further, you get well-defined, multilayered characters and a romantic suspense in the making. Pretty soon you will be amazed on the intricate storyline balanced well with the main characters developing romance.  Fool Me Once is definitely a Catherine Bybee book.  The first in her new series, First Wives,  Fool Me Once is also a spinoff from her popular Weekday Bride series.  And yet again, Ms. Bybee delivers in her great characters, well thought out plot and melding her two series together without one overpowering the other.
The story starts out as the head of Alliance and their legal go to person, Lori try to help one of their client who unexpectedly lost her husband.  To get her away …
