Quick Review: A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev

Image
Title:   A Bollywood Affair Author:   Sonali Dev Genre: Contemporary Romance, Women's Fiction, Published : October 28, 2014 Publisher: Kensington Rating :♨♨♨♨♨  5 of 5 c ups Review : Excellently written with a detailed and nuance account of a cultural divide not just  between countries but within the same society, the western way of life compared to eastern, specifically Indian, urban versus rural traditions.  Readers will simply adore Mili and Samir, especially Mili's charming, innocent, independent personality.  She displays a strength most modern women have when it comes to balancing traditional values with modern ones.  Samir has that strong almost devil may care playboy attitude that hides a sensitive soul and a great talent for cooking.  Ms. Dev has managed to capture the essence of how modern sentiments clashes with long held tradition in Indian society regardless of location. A Bollywood Affair is the perfect blend of humor and ...

Quick Review: Elderberry Croft by Becky Doughty

Image
Elderberry Croft is a series of short stories to warm the heart. A few paragraphs in and I was engrossed. Reading it was akin to being marvelled at the changing of seasons like those books which are good companions to a mug of cider on a winter day or chilled lemonade on deep summer as you settle in a cosy corner. The collection breaks down in monthly chapters with romantic titles; such as February Embers, May Enchantments, September Longing. It all began when a mysterious girl moves into an empty cottage at The Coach House Trailer Park and christens it Elderberry Croft. The tenants of the park, who think the park is the last stop on the road and idly while away their days in seclusion, merely gave her a few weeks to move away. But as the new girl, Willow, starts charming her neighbours and breathes certain vigour in each of their lives, her enigma unravels as well and they all journey together towards hope and healing. Elderberry Croft was a wonderful read filled with i...

Quick Review: Lizzy & Jane by Katherine Reay

Image
Title:   Lizzy and Jane   Author :  Katherine Reay Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Women's Fiction, Christian Published : October 28, 2014 Publisher : Thomas Nelson Rating : ♨♨♨♨♨ (  5 of 5 c ups) Review : Lizzy and Jane was a perfect melding of those often read and beloved literature with the sustaining comfort of food and the inevitable ups and downs of life. Ms. Reay has crafted a tale so engaging and captivating from its main protagonist to the secondary characters that make it whole and the truly unique approach of melding food and taste in literature. Lizzy as a character was both fascinating and frustrating, totally human while her sister Jane, is well the same. You continuously cheer for them and you hope for that happily ever after not so much for the romance aspect (although thats a given ) but more for them as sisters. Its an inspirational story but its not preaching in its approach. The incorporation of literary works and how it influences yo...

Deep Summer by Gwen Bristow

Image
Gwen Bristow’s classic Southern novel tells of the first forays of a family of settlers in deep Louisiana. The Sheramys travelled from Connecticut to what they call then as West Florida in the 1880s to claim a land property. As they cruised along the Mississippi River, they happened to meet a dashing young man who fancied the Sheramy daughter, Judith.   Originally published in 1937 and the first book in Plantation Trilogy, Deep Summer is mostly the story of Judith Sheramy and Phillip Larne when they first started building their plantation, Ardeith.  Filled with languid prose and gripping details of slavery in the Deep South, Bristow writes with gentle genuineness but without reluctance. It evokes a bittersweet feeling of nostalgia and painful truths as the author chose to delve down and explore each character’s potentials and presented a spitting image of the struggles of planters and slaves. What remained to me after reading it is that the characters are qui...
