Review Post: An Unexpected Afterlife by Dan Sofer

Moshe Karlin wakes up one morning, naked and alone, in the Mount of Olives Cemetery. According to his family and friends, he died two years ago, but Moshe is not about to accept his demise lying down.

Is his new lease on life a freak of nature or the start of the long-awaited Resurrection? Moshe doesn't really care. He vows to beat his "afterlife crisis" and win back his life-and his wife-if it is the last thing he does.

But the road ahead is full of unexpected dangers. Along the way he gains insight into life, love, and the Jewish State, as well as the suspicion that perhaps his perfect first life was not so perfect after all.

Meanwhile, other changes are afoot in the Holy Land. A reluctant prophet prepares to deliver a message of redemption-and the end of life as we know it-when a freak accident changes the course of history.

Away from my usual genre, I picked up an unexpected book for my latest read and review!

Dan Sofer’s An Unexpected Afterlife tells us the story of Moshe Karlin, who finds himself naked in a cemetery, gets thrown out of his home by his wife and learns that he has been dead for two years.

We follow his journey as he tries to solve the mystery of his resurrection, while trying to win back his family and make the most out of his second life.

Writing was wonderful - the plot was fresh and the pace was good. The author’s way of describing anything and everything is very clear. The novel was set in Israel and I have gotten a glimpse of their culture, beliefs and places through this book. The characters were also well written, with their own flaws and emotional baggage. It was very easy to empathize with them. I also like the occasional insert of humor in its pages.

An Unexpected Afterlife is the first book of The Dry Bones Society series. So glad I managed to finish the book on time because the sequel An Accidental Messiah will be out in paperback in a few days!

With a very unique premise, An Unexpected Afterlife gives us a wonderful tale with a mix of mystery, humor and love that will surely tug at your heartstrings.
