Fiance by Friday

I was expecting a fluffy romance and I got one of the best romantic suspense novels I've read this year. Catherine Bybee's unique writing style kept me at the edge of my seat.  Part of the Weekday Brides Series, Fiance by Friday can be read as a standalone with no confusion as to what has gone before.  The plot was simple. However, the tension and suspense was kept tight that the reader's interest never waned. The resolution of the conflict was well done, with plausible explanations as to why certain events happened. The character of Gwen and Neil was well developed.  The dialogue swift, sassy and the chemistry between these two was about to blow when you start reading.  Although the book is part of a series, with some of the past characters coming into play there was never any doubt that this was all about Gwen and Neil and dealing with Neil's past. Their appearance simply enhanced the suspense aspect of the book, keeping it moving forward. Gwen and Neil's relationship did not have that instant lust and love happening since apparently in the past books, the attraction to one another has already started and just simmered along. This was introduced really well too, which speaks greatly about the author's writing.  Gwen's character was definitely one of the positives, with her elegance, her wanting independence and not relying on anyone even for her protection definitely just emphasized how smart she was and pragmatic. Wonderful combination in a female character. She was definitely not a damsel in distress but more of the knight in shining armor. Neil's reluctance to engage in anything more with her is understandable as well. He has to deal with a lot of stuff in his past that isn't easy to actually get over with as people with the same background will understand. Overall, this is one fantastic ride and I definitely will want to read more from this author.

Gwen Harrison:

The beautiful, high-born daughter of an English duke came to America to take over her sister-in-law’s matchmaking business. But just because she’s the boss doesn’t mean she can’t fantasize about making her own perfect match with bodyguard Neil MacBain. Will the enigmatic man who haunts her dreams cost her more than she bargained for?

Neil MacBain:

The retired Marine can’t deny the effect blue-blooded Gwen has on his troubled soul or his battle-hardened body. But as a client, Gwen is off-limits—until a threat from Neil’s past returns…and Gwen is caught in the crossfire. Now to keep her safe he will risk it all: his career, his life…and his heart

Review Post: Fool Me Once by Catherine Bybee

Rating/Review: ☕☕☕☕ 1/2 (4.5 cups, this romantic suspense will give new meaning to The First Wives Club)
You never know what you really would be getting when reading a Catherine Bybee book.  On the outside, each book can definitely hold its own as a great contemporary romance novel.  Read a little bit further, you get well-defined, multilayered characters and a romantic suspense in the making. Pretty soon you will be amazed on the intricate storyline balanced well with the main characters developing romance.  Fool Me Once is definitely a Catherine Bybee book.  The first in her new series, First Wives,  Fool Me Once is also a spinoff from her popular Weekday Bride series.  And yet again, Ms. Bybee delivers in her great characters, well thought out plot and melding her two series together without one overpowering the other.
