The Field Trip by R.A. Andrade

Image
It's been a long while since I read science fiction, not since those old Dean Koontz days when I devoured most of it. This one was a mysterious surprise. At the start, I couldn't wait for the adventure and the traipse to the New England forest for I know the place is lush and picturesque. But, of course, I had to wind my way first through the botany professor's rather mundane turned lively love life coupled with some angst. There was something that bothered me yet I couldn't put my finger on it until only near the end. On his way to the research trip, he meets this odd and rather repulsive (in a D.H. Lawrence kind of way) (disturbing) woman and yet something in her rough-around-the-edges ways drew him to her. They then disembark together into an adventure neither of them ever expected. Neither did I. That's the surprise part. The characters aren't very much endearing at first impression though further on in the book they were given such depths that you...

Blog Tour: Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Tilia Klebenov Jacobs

Image
Book Synopsis: When Tsara Adelman leaves her husband and two young children for a weekend to visit her estranged uncle, she little dreams he is holding several local children captive on his lavish estate. Mike Westbrook, father of one of the boys, kidnaps her to trade her life for the children’s. Soon Tsara and Mike are fleeing through New Hampshire’s mountain wilderness pursued by two rogue cops with murder on their minds. Review: Wrong Place, Wrong Time was a well written and fast paced thriller. There was more to this book than the summary suggested. For one the abduction and the reason for why happens in the first half of the book. The other part dealt with the aftermath which reads more like a procedural crime story. If you like the TV show Law and Order it will remind you of that. The characters were well developed and fleshed out, but as a reader you tend to side with Mike rather than Tsara despite the fact she suffered more. Tsara also had to deal with the ps...

Set your sights on "The Fixer" by T.E Woods

Image
Book Summary: Never a doubt. Never a mistake. Always for justice. Never for revenge. She’s the person you hire when you need something fixed—permanently. With a strict set of criteria, she evaluates every request and chooses only a few. No more than one job per country, per year. She will only step in if it’s clear that justice will not be served any other way. Her jobs are completed with skill and precision, and never result in inquiry or police investigation. The Fixer is invisible—and quite deadly. . . . In the office of a clinical psychologist in Olympia, Washington, a beautiful young woman is in terrible emotional pain. She puts up walls, tells lies, and seems to speak in riddles, but the doctor is determined to help her heal, despite the fact that she claims to have hurt many people. As their sessions escalate, the psychologist feels compelled to reach out to the police . . . but it might be too late. In Seattle, a detective gets a call from his son. A dedicate...

Lightning by Dean Koontz

Image
Bolts of lightning for us are natural phenomenons forking up in the sky but for Laura Shane it is anything but natural. These lightnings bring tidings, a foreboding or worse, a fate on the brink of death. For each time it strikes somewhere nearby, she knows she'll be in danger and with certainty, she knows her mysterious "guardian angel" will appear to save her. A book of paradoxes is what this is. It lets your mind cruise along its assuming path then flips out on you while your brain scrambles back to get its bearings. Out of all Koontz books, this is an instant favorite even after all these years, even for a non-science junkie like me.

Vicious by Victoria Schwab

Image
Victor Vale and Eli Cardale started out as best friends and roommates in the prestigious Lockland University. They're both brilliant, ambitious, and ruthless. On their senior year, Eli decided to research about the existence of ExtraOrdinary people or EOs - people who have super human powers. People thought of it as a joke but this only instilled jealousy in Victor, who thought that it was an challenging research compared to his research on adrenal inducers. The connection of their researches led to experiments with themselves as the test subjects. Victor and Eli succeeded and they are now armed with dangerous power in their hands. Ten years later, Victor has escaped from prison with only one thing in his mind: Revenge.

Book to Film: Atonement by Ian McEwan

The story starts off in summer 1935, a busy day for the Tallis household. Thirteen year old Briony Tallis is preparing for a play that she wrote herself to present to her brother. Briony then sees her older sister Cecilia and Robbie, son of the housekeeper, in a rather sexual situation which young Briony misinterprets. An incident happens during the family's dinner party and one of her cousins, Lola, was discovered to be raped by an unknown assailant. Briony then accuses Robbie as the criminal. Though Robbie claims to be innocent, he is taken away to be imprisoned and this incident destroys the loving family that Briony has known.

The Seduction of Miriam Cross by Wendy Tyson

Image
The Seduction of Miriam Cross is one mystery thriller that is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat. An excellently written, fast paced murder mystery that has a lot of twist and turns in the plot enough to keep you guessing in the end. Delilah Percy Powers, private investigator has been asked to help solve the murder of the famous novelist Miriam Cross. It turns out its never as simple as that.  As Delilah and her team investigates further, revelations lead them to a path more dangerous than they could have imagined.  This was a great storyline with more than solving the crime, it also delves into the dark social issues of human trafficking and slavery. Delilah was a fantastic female lead, strong, vulnerable with a take-no prisoner attitude. Despite her own emotional and psychological issues, this did not overtake the story, adding only a certain depth to it. Other secondary characters are gradually introduced as well.   Credit to the author since th...

Something Borrowed, Someone Dead: Agatha Raisin Mystery by MC Beaton

Image
This was a fun and quirky whodunit that left me laughing and more bewildered about Agatha Raisin and her detectives than the mystery itself. Something Borrowed, Someone Dead opens with the death of Gloria French, the do-gooder who has a knack of borrowing stuff from her neighbors and never giving it back. Death by Elderberry wine that was the verdict and yet suspicious circumstances has left the town of Piddlebury cautious. Hence, the services of Agatha Raisin, private investigator was employed. What happens afterwards is a tale of village blackmail, a couple of murders, a coven of witches all wrapped up in humorous and witty dialogue and events. Add in a veritable number of oddball sleuths and you have an entertaining murder mystery. Agatha Raisin, is not by all means Miss Marple, in fact she seems the total opposite, with her smoking and her loud acerbic personality and her obsession with good looking men. But her wit and sharp intelligence saves the day. Her merry band of...

Hunter by JAX aka Jacquelyn Frank

Image
I really liked this book. JAX, aka Jacquelyn Frank, is a really talented writer when it comes to world building and character development. This time around Hunter centers around witches and warlock, good versus evil and true love versus extremely addicting sexual attraction. Hunter has returned to Willow Coven, after 10 long years of soul searching. Known as the Sentinel, a very strong Spellcaster, he has been summoned as evil has threatened his family. Tatyana finds her way to the Willow Coven house that same night, unaware of the danger she has fallen into while seeking her brother Dmitri who has found his path among a new family. Hunter , despite the title, is actually a very good paranormal thriller centered around magic.   Romance is definitely the central theme but the Willow Coven and its band of white or good witches are definitely a story on its own. The author excels in vivid description, fantastic characters with very individual traits that jump off the pag...

Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts

Image
Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature. But there's also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive fire-fighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan's blood: her father is a legend in the field. She's been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home - even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air. Fortunately, this year's rookie crop is among the strongest ever - and Gulliver Curry's one of the best. He's also a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kid's arc...
