Spotlight Tour: Grace Burrowes' The Duke's Courtship Duology

Image
A Message from the Author My parents recently celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary—you read that correctly, 7-0. I’m the sixth of their seven children, so I missed a lot of the opening rounds of the Burrowes family story. To make up for that great unfairness, I ask my parents and my older siblings to fill in blanks for me. What was it like for my mom, starting out with twin boys, when the nice obstetrician—who didn’t want to upset her—failed to inform her she was carrying twins? Mom learned she was to embark on double motherhood in the delivery room, when the nurse said, “Keep pushing, Mrs. Burrowes. You’re still in labor.” She kept pushing. My brother Dick is particularly grateful she did, too. What was it like for my father, to be the sole support of nine people, various shirt-tail cousins, and extended family members, on just a professor’s salary? We never did without the essentials. How did he DOOOOO that? These stori...

Suspended Sentences by Patrick Modiano

Image
It is perhaps a lovelier endeavour to read this in French as it is originally written because it is somewhat inevitable that some things get lost in translation. All the same reading it in English is quite pleasurable. This is Patrick Modiano’s Paris, shadowy and romantic (akin to the atmospheric book cover on the left). Suspended Sentences , composing of three novellas, got the feel of an array of old photographs brimming over with nostalgia of forgotten and abandoned places. His asymmetrical prose resembles shifty memories. It evoked a lingering scent of dusty air and melancholy. Such is the beauty of Modiano’s work. There may be not much solid framework to its plot or characters, but it is laden with emotion and carried afloat by its lasting impressions.

Book to Film: My House in Umbria by William Trevor

Image
British romance novelist Emily Delahunty had traveled to Rome by train when the carriage she sat on, along with others, got blown up by a bomb explosion. Presently, she lives in a quaint villa in the hills of Umbria which has now became a haven for the remnant survivors; an old Englishman, a young German lad, and an American girl. In the surface, it seems like an idyllic scene as Mrs. Delahunty spends her time in nostalgia, drinking grappa, taking walks along the Italian countryside and sitting in her private rooms with a shelf displaying her array of novels but beneath this delightful image runs a dark past and dim musings. As is the facade of a quiet pensione villa for tourists that now houses a handful of people, walking figures of grief and pain and survival.

Shopgirl by Steve Martin

Image
Lonely beauty Mirabelle spends her days on the glove counter of Neiman Marcus and spends her nights alone in her apartment with her cats. She captures the attentions of a middle-aged millionaire Ray Porter and the rather queer slacker Jeremy. Shy as she was, like a wallflower, she attempts a relationship with Ray who is almost twice her age and the romantic journey takes her off her comfort zones as they both struggle to place their footing with each other. The short novella's melancholic tone moved me, its subtle overtures quite tender, pushing on the psyche which I believe is what Steve Martin aims for. I look at it as a gradual romance. It touches more the silences, the pauses between the grinding chatter of our minds. Martin isn't afraid to dwell on these still and in-between moments and stretch it beyond the normal length of time to ponder. It exhausts possibilities of a tentative fragile threshold, that short pause before a person starts to speak, before a dec...

Just One Day by Sharla Lovelace

Image
I really like this story, although very short I think it did work within the boundaries of the theme which is the title itself, Just One Day . Andie was given 24 hours by her significant other to think about his proposal. Of which she publicly threw up on, literally, the night before. You would think after 2 years of being in the relationship it would have been obvious what the answer would be. Instead she took the 24 hours and just drove destination unknown. Call it fate, she ends up in an out of the way diner and face to face with her unforgettable and hot one day romance that happened twenty years before. And so the next twenty four hours becomes something worth remembering as well. I like the tone of the story, I like the fact that Andie is in her forties and still so very much looking for that undefinable thing called love. I like the way the author was able to put together a tale that on paper looks really simple but ends up with a lot of other things as well. The mai...

Making It Last (Camelot Series) by Ruthie Knox

Image
Meet Amber and Tony, a wonderful couple, together for 14 years, married for ten and have three beautiful children together. They seem like the poster child for a successful marriage.  That is until Amber starts falling apart.  This is an enlightening tale of what happens after the happily ever after. Making It Last, the fourth book in the Camelot series,  tells what marriage truly is about.  That sometimes in the pursuit of that happily ever after you kind of forgotten that there was a You and I in the Us.  It isn't just the role of provider and caretaker, mom and dad that can keep it together. It simply is keeping each other in sight and knowing that you have each other, you can survive anything.  This is a really good book, full of poignant, heartbreaking scenes, one that most married and even single people will definitely respond to.  Ruthie Knox is one truly talented writer. "You, she thought.   I choose you.  I choose this. ...
