A Thing of Beauty by Lisa Samson

Image
A Thing of Beauty started promising; an old cluttered mansion, an array of junk for art, a distant past of showbiz, cruising down Baltimore, hanging out on your quirky friend’s café. Fiona’s internal struggle feels real and resonated with me. I find myself mulling over the passages relating to her doomed prospects. Then there was the arrival of Josiah, a local blacksmith who rents a room in Fiona’s mansion as a boarder. He seemed steady and brimming with wisdom, perhaps a balm to Fiona’s restlessness and drifting. Around halfway through, I got a little lost and am left unsure. In the end, all is well that ends well though I find myself a little bit disappointed. The story soared off in flapping wings, stuttered somewhere in the middle, got confused then veered off from its path, I felt, as if in indecision. While I felt a little kinship to Fiona, she gradually drifted away to me somewhat the further I read while Josiah, for every succeeding appearance, began to win me...

Blog Blitz Tour: Elements of Chemistry: Capture by Penny Reid

Capture  Hypothesis #3 by  Penny Reid   Publication Date:   May 16, 2015 Genres:   Contemporary ,  Humor ,  N ew Adult ,  Romance Amazon  •  Nook  •  Kobo  •  iBooks Elements of Chemistry: CAPTURE is the third part in a three part series; it is 70k words. Part 1 (ATTRACTION)   released April 9, 2015. Part 2 (HEAT)   released April 30, 2015. Part 3 (CAPTURE)   released  May 16, 2015 . About Penny Reid SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (b...

Game of Scones by Samantha Tonge

Image
Oh, this one brings some angst and is not typically all romantic and sweet. A feel-good one, not entirely in story per se but, in the form of the village life, its beauty and people, as well as the drool-worthy delicious scones and Greek cuisine. In her rather cheeky voice, Samantha Tonge hits it right about the nostalgia of the carefree summer days of childhood which linger with us through our adult years (especially in the middle of dreary jobs or the tired urban jungle). Game of Scones  is humorous in narrative, flavored with angst (though hardly a Greek romantic tragedy) and filled with heartwarming characters, food and sunshine. The lulling charm of the Greek countryside and its residents may be the high point for me. I like that it was also complimented by practical views in that living away from the city isn't all idyllic and sort of escapist but also hard, almost brutal. Yet the rewards (hearing the birds, the smell of the sea, the natural vistas) appear exhilar...

Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart

Image
Nine Coaches Waiting  is perhaps Mary Stewart's most popular novel and I resisted myself for a while reading it sooner. I had this notion of savoring her romantic suspense books to last me for a good long while as my reading list is getting shorter (only three books left and then no more!) Here we travel to the impressive Chateau Valmy up in the French Alps, surrounded by old elegance and cold mist. Linda Martin, a young Englishwoman settles in to become the governess of a nine-year-old Count. Sounds dreamy, like idyllic high mountain countryside dreamy and quite appealing however soon Linda's impressions of the place and the people living in the Chateau takes a bit of a turn as a creeping danger slowly sweeps in. One of the most thrilling perhaps, right there with Madam, Will You Talk?, the book is filled with a moodiness coating the lengthy enchanting prose of Stewart like a film noir . I like how Mary Stewart plays up the landscape and weather into the tone of the ...

They laid still, gleaming in the moonlight waiting for me too, it seemed. I sat in the passenger side seat, one boot still on the gravel, and made the first move. Raising a trembling hand toward the temptation, my fingers felt the cool length of each blade. The rage still burned in my veins and I felt myself sobering, hesitating.  N...
