The Dying Animal by Phillip Roth

Image
Some books have that particular pervading smell. This book is one of them. It is what I would come to think as entering a men's club. I cannot escape the sense of being inside a masculine study filled with leather bound books, the rustling of papers in a corner oak table, a lingering smell of tobacco left on an ashtray. That is how it was reading this book. A friend lent it to me and considering her tastes (which is a bit opposite of mine), I thought it is a bit as insane as she. And I meant that in an overwhelmingly brilliant way. Written in a long monologue, like an endless stream of soliloquies, an aging David Kepesh dishes out the finer points of his life and his involvement with a young woman named Consuela Castillo while touching on other topics in between. Opinions about politics, growing old, social structure, war, etc are laid out along with the sexual revolution of the sixties, women, love and other musings.

Book to Film: Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

Image
It's the go to place. Often, things boil down to basking under the Tuscan sun, yearning for a new start, for an enlightened state, a reprieve from the buzzard or the banality of the day to day (considering the number of memoirs about moving to Italy). So I keep wondering there must be something under that piece of Northern Italy sky. Frances Mayes subtly illustrates her summers in her Tuscan villa in delicate prose and impressions, giving us an almost normal portraiture of the little activities happening in her town, Cortona. Some things are simple like picking herbs outside her kitchen garden for her recipes and digging up potatoes while others get a bit difficult like getting official papers and dealing with house builders among others. It feels nostalgic, as if the memoir has become distant memories sifted in the author's mind, reminiscing luminous moments from the remnants of her divorce to the time she bought the abandoned villa. From the details of her flower ga

Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

On his break from a season and driving along the highway in Colorado, Dean Robillard passed by a walking headless beaver. A very pissed girl in a beaver mascot, that is. What starts as a hilarious interlude becomes an amusing companionship and from there, things escalate to the gypsy caravan..er, the unexpected. There are few books which had me laughing on the first paragraph and this is but a first, methinks, that got me on the first sentence. It's been a while since I last read a SEP novel and I am surprised I find it still refreshing.

Blog Tour: Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Tilia Klebenov Jacobs

Image
Book Synopsis: When Tsara Adelman leaves her husband and two young children for a weekend to visit her estranged uncle, she little dreams he is holding several local children captive on his lavish estate. Mike Westbrook, father of one of the boys, kidnaps her to trade her life for the children’s. Soon Tsara and Mike are fleeing through New Hampshire’s mountain wilderness pursued by two rogue cops with murder on their minds. Review: Wrong Place, Wrong Time was a well written and fast paced thriller. There was more to this book than the summary suggested. For one the abduction and the reason for why happens in the first half of the book. The other part dealt with the aftermath which reads more like a procedural crime story. If you like the TV show Law and Order it will remind you of that. The characters were well developed and fleshed out, but as a reader you tend to side with Mike rather than Tsara despite the fact she suffered more. Tsara also had to deal with the ps

Book to Film: A Room with a View by E. M. Forster

Image
In these days when I have been burying myself on modern classics, this book finally got its turn. What more, I watched both film adaptations beforehand and genuinely found it lovely. A Room with a View  tells us about a young English woman traveling to Florence with her cousin guardian. She meets a few of the English tourists in their Italian pension over dinner and what starts as a typical appropriate discussion about "a room with a view" turns into an awakening of a woman's heart and mind to the beauty, to the discoveries of living life. Forster writes the classic (British) way of exploring a coming of age story, about a girl wrapped in the pleasantries and manners of her own circle that when she finds herself outside the zone of her comfort was made to grasp the threshold of a different view. If I had not known beforehand the gist of the book, I'd have tired of half the rambling conversations that make no sense to me, that offer nothing to enlighten nor t

Book Club: Breakfast At Tiffany's: In which we discuss the book and the movie

Image
Book Synopsis: With her tousled blond hair and upturned nose, dark glasses and chic black dresses, Holly Golightly is top notch in style and a sensation wherever she goes. Her brownstone apartment vibrates with martini-soaked parties as she plays hostess to millionaires and gangsters alike. Yet Holly never loses sight of her ultimate goal - to find a real life place like Tiffany's that makes her feel at home. Immortalized in a film starring Audrey Hepburn, Truman Capote's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is full of sharp wit and in its exuberant cast of characters vividly captures the restless, slightly madcap era of early 1940s New York. So who hasn't heard of Breakfast at Tiffany's?  More likely one would either be familiar with Truman Capote's novella of which the movie was based on.  The movie starred the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn and the dashing George Peppard with more people probably remembering to watch rather than reading the book.  Mention the

The Secret Star by K.C. Finn

Image
It was just another day for 35-year-old-turning-36-tomorrow Jeffrey Mercier, when he woke up on his flat in London in 1969. He went on with his usual routine, going to work for his boring job at Harlan and Locke. It did seem to be an ordinary day, until a young woman told him that he's gonna die in ten minutes if he won't go out of the building. Of course he didn't believe her, yet he found himself outside the building ten minutes later, the building blown up. He was saved again from a stampede by the same young woman whom he met ten minutes ago, introducing herself as Marie-Elizabeth Giraud. Marie was tasked to save Jeff from death and take him to the Time Agency, where he's going to be inducted as a time agent. Later that day, Jeffrey Mercier's life as Mister Mercy begins.

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

There's food, herbs and recipes, magic and romance, family squabbles and hints of bitter sweetness, with ghosts even; it is heartwarming as it is magical. These elements prevalent on Latin American literature always draw me in. Language aside, perhaps it is its proximity to our own culture that enables me to appreciate it as if looking on cloudy mirrors. Tita, the youngest in the De La Garza family, is bound by tradition to remain at the ranch and take care of her mother, never to marry. She falls in love with Pedro who cannot get enough of the delicious dishes she cooks. To be close to her, Pedro marries her sister in desperation. Will their love ever prevail against all odds?
